Book Review: Ascent From Darkness, How Satan’s Soldier Became God’s Warrior
The first thing that struck me about Mr. Leehan’s writing was its bluntness. There are very few Christian authors out there that speak in terms that are understood by the secular world or even those who are Christians. His is not a tale of someone’s “fall from Grace” but a stark, gritty, and shocking story of a revolt against that Grace.
Most of us are only vaguely aware of the invisible war going on around us in the form of God and good versus Satan and evil. In Leehan’s book we get a front row seat in the theater as he describes his conscious rebellion against a God he didn’t understand. Angry and depressed with how his life is going, Leehan actually declares his allegiance to Satan and so begins a most horrific and amazing journey.
The thing that amazes me most about Michael’s story is just how patient and forgiving God is and how He can take any situation and use it for his Glory. This book is a shocking reminder of just how far Satan is willing to go to keep each and every one of us away from the Kingdom. Even to the extent of walking the aisles of our own churches.
One of the most interesting passages in the book talks about how Satan preys on new believers by infiltrating Bible studies and targeting the weak; the people who haven’t established themselves in their faith and get them to sin. In so doing an imaginary rift is created between them and God that is filled with shame. Often this causes the person to cease all connection with the church out of shame and guilt; A huge wake-up call to all pastors and leaders.
As Christians we need to be aware of the war we are in and be prepared to fight in that war daily. Leehan’s book clearly and graphically gives us an inside look at the tactics used to separate us from God. I recommend reading it but be warned, it is not an easy read. Do so prayerfully and carefully.
